before rough dirt slopeafter retaining landscaping

With the warm months rapidly approaching, it will soon be time for lawn maintenance and yard work to begin in earnest. If you plan to hire a professional landscaper to make your outdoor space beautiful, there are some important questions you should ask before the work is started.

1. Ask to see a commercial liability policy and a portfolio of prior work.

While the warmth brings out professional landscapers, it can also unfortunately bring out individuals who might not be qualified for the job. Be sure anyone you allow to work on your property has proper insurance, as well verifiable references of quality work. A professional company will always be happy to provide you with this information, and you'll have peace of mind knowing that you're protected from both a safety standpoint and from unprofessional work.

2. Ask if they source their trees, shrubs, and plants locally.

Greenery that is sourced locally is more likely to remain hardy and healthy and will acclimate easier to areas with like temperatures and soil quality. And local fauna typically can be sourced at lower prices.

3. Ask what types of outdoor structures they have experience with.

Find out what experience your contractor has with different aspects of landscaping. While you may have just had plans to install an outdoor fireplace area, the fact that your landscape pro also builds the best water features in the area may make you consider adding that.

4. Ask for the estimated time of project completion.

As with most home-improvement projects and updates, try to nail down a time for completion of your job. Be sure to communicate any plans you have for the future with your outdoor space (lawn party, BBQ, etc.) directly to your contractor. Keep in mind that factors like weather can have a huge impact on timelines. Open lines of communication help ensure you're always on the same page with your landscaper.

5. Ask who you should contact with any questions or issues.

Always get clear information on who the first point-of-contact is should a problem arise during or after your landscaping project. Ask the foreman for this information very early on in the process. Don't be afraid to ask questions at any time should you be unsure of the work; this will help both you and your landscaping pro.
