No landscape design is complete without furniture! To make the most of your outdoor space, you'll need to arrange furniture in a way that will complement it and function the way you need it to. Here are seven easy tips for arranging outdoor furniture in your landscape design:
1. Decide on the purpose of your space. Do you plan to host a lot of outdoor parties? Are you looking to spend more time outdoors with family? Are you craving a space to relax and read a book? Or all of the above? Make a list of how you’d like to use your outdoor space, then plan what furniture you’ll need accordingly. If you have the space, create zones — have a large seating area with a couch, chairs, and coffee table for entertaining, a bar or table and chairs for outdoor dining, and one or two small spaces with just a chair or two with a table beside them for some quiet time.
2. Group furniture around a focal point. Draw attention to that cool fire pit or beautiful outdoor patio! Arrange your furniture so that people will gather around your landscape design.
3. Consider traffic flow. Be sure you’re leaving enough room for people to move freely through your space and around your furniture.
4. Give your outdoor area an indoor look. Adding colorful throw pillows, cozy cushions, and decorative items such as candles, lanterns, pottery, and plants to your furniture will make your space inviting and comfortable.
5. Make use of shade. Use awnings, umbrellas, or place some furniture under trees if possible. A trellis over your patio with winding vines is a great way to partially block sun while adding beauty.
6. Don’t be afraid of small spaces. Even a small balcony or porch can be transformed with outdoor furniture! Use bistro sets or a chair with a small table. Just be sure to leave room for movement around the furniture.
7. Incorporate outdoor lighting. While not technically furniture, lighting plays an important role in your outdoor space. Consider lighting the pathway to your outdoor space, add spotlights around trees or other architectural features, or simply string lights in trees. In addition to providing visibility, you'll be able to enjoy your landscape longer!
Bonus tip: Keep your outdoor furniture clean. No one wants to spend their time constantly scrubbing down their outdoor furniture. Choose pieces that are durable and easy to maintain. Polywood furniture resists stains and mildew, can withstand harsh weather, doesn’t need to be painted, and is easily maintained with just a few washes or spot cleaning.
