As you can see, there are several types and styles of lighting that can be used in your home landscaping plan. They all features different purposes and evoke certain moods, which we will talk about below!

Highlighting:

Highlighting is accomplished by placing lights at the base of whatever you wish to “highlight.” It helps to provide shape, color, and form. Some people choose to use this technique for highlighting their favorite flowers or plants, others use it to give their water features a boost, and some use it specially for holidays and to give things a seasonal look.

Silhouetting:

Artists and photographers throughout the entirety of time have used silhouetting as a way to create a dramatic effect, that highlights shape and form. To create a silhouette effect, all you need to do is place lighting behind your subject. Silhouetting works especially well for dense objects and subjects such as planters, topiaries, and well-manicured shrubs and hedges.

Washing:

Washing is typically used for creating a soft, ambient glow. It can be used in a variety of applications, whether it be for a garden sign or wall, or for use to highlight some of your best landscaping work. It utilizes a bright, direct light to bring out the best in your home’s features.

Shadowing:

Shadowing works well to create almost a magical effect. It’s used for illuminating background surfaces which and helps to cast ethereal shadows upon walls or other building facades. It’s typically achieved by low lighting that is angled up to create a large shadow that appears larger than the original object or feature.

Moonlighting:

Moonlighting appears similar to a “moonlit” glow and is commonly used for paths or roads. It is the result of light fixtures high up in the trees and is angled down. It has the potential to make interesting shadows on the ground.

Path Lighting:

True to its name, path lighting is used most often to, well, light up paths. This type of lighting creates a sense of safety and security, and helps homeowners and visitors see where they’re going when it’s dark out. It can also contribute to a sense of “romance” as many poets have described in times past.

Accent Lighting:

If you don’t need a whole lot of lighting, but you want to spruce up your home and landscape a bit, consider accent lighting!

This technique is most often used to draw attention to a featured object such as a statue or water fountain. The key of this type of lighting is to show exactly what you want to show, and nothing you don’t.
