Benefits of Overseeding Your Lawn
Who doesn’t love a lush, gorgeous lawn? A great lawn adds curb appeal, value and can help prevent erosion from water and wind. To keep your lawn looking lush and healthy, consider overseeding!
What is Overseeding a Lawn?
In short, overseeding a lawn is exactly what it sounds like—spreading grass seed over existing turf, filling in patches of missing grass or bare spots, as well as thickening areas of your lawn where grass is sparse. When you overseed your lawn, you help bring back it’s vibrance and revitalize its appearance.
Overseeding a lawn is best done in the warmer months, and late spring/early summer. This helps give the grass the right temperatures and environment to properly germinate and work their magic on your lawn.
Steps for Overseeding Your Lawn:
• Before you begin, mow your grass as low as it can go so that the seeds can get the right amount of sunlight and nutrients they need to thrive.
• Prep your lawn by cleaning up or raking brush such as excess leaves, sticks, twigs, dead grass and grass clipping. Raking loosens the topsoil which makes it easier for the seeds to attach to the ground, and promotes deeper root growth for healthier grass.
• Fix existing issues with your lawn. This could include aeration and de-thatching.
• Amend the soil. Plants of all kinds need good soil to thrive. Amending your lawn’s soil, or replacing nutrients that have been used up by old plants and grass is a key step in having healthy grass. Compost or enriched soil spread over your lawn will do the trick!
• Choose grass seed that does especially well in your area. Here in Western North Carolina, some great choices are Bermuda grass, bluegrass, and perennial ryegrass are some great options as they withstand the scorching southern temperatures and mild winter temperatures, are drought resistant, and insect resistant.
• Once you’ve chose the best variety for your area, spread the grass seed! Most bags of grass seed have specific instructions for doing so, so consult the directions for further advice if needed.
• Nurture your grass. Provide your new grass seedlings with the right amount of nutrients and water, and they will repay you with the lawn of your dreams for many years! Right after seeding, minimize traffic so that your new grass has the chance to establish itself and grow big and strong.
