Once landscape lighting is installed on your property, it’s easy to forget the importance of maintaining it—that is, until a light stops working. Depending on the age of your lighting system, as well as the materials it’s composed of, you should schedule a maintenance check at least once per year. It’ll save you money in the long run. Here’s why.
Fixtures
- Cleaning and removing debris from your lighting fixtures extends their lifespan
- Material matters—brass and copper fixtures withstand weather much longer, while plastic or composite fixtures require more frequent replacement
- The quality of fixtures you have determines how well-protected your light bulbs are
Bulbs
- If you’re using any bulb other than LED, yearly replacement is a good idea, even if none of your bulbs have yet gone out
- The average system runs for 8-10 hours a day, so, for example, if you’re using a halogen bulb (average lifespan of 3,000 – 4,000 hours), you’ll get about a year’s worth of light out of it anyway
- When changing bulbs, it’s important to inspect the socket for corrosion
Lens
- Over time debris buildup can begin to obstruct light from fully projecting, and debris removal requires a delicate hand and the right cleaning solution
- Lenses may also become scratched, at which point replacement is necessary
Connections
- The most common cause of lighting issues
- Damage to connections can occur for a variety of reasons—dogs or kids digging up the yard, high foot traffic, severe weather
- Once a wire becomes exposed, it’s very likely it’ll become damaged or cause someone to trip and injure themselves
- It’s important exposed lines are reburied as soon as possible
The more you stay on top of your landscape lighting’s maintenance, the more likely you’ll avoid having to replace your entire lighting system when you could’ve simply cleaned/replaced a few components.
