You’ve worked hard to maintain your landscape over the years. But over time, even well-kept landscapes can begin to lose their luster. Planters crack, patios become dingy with dirt buildup, and outdoor furniture develops mold and mildew. Here’s how you can give your landscape an overhaul to keep it looking its best.
Pressure wash and seal patios
- Rent or buy a gas, medium powered pressure washer and, using its soap nozzle, give your patios and walkways a good spray. Begin at the farthest point away from the exit and working outward.
- Once the surface is completely dry (usually 1-2 days depending on weather), apply a sealer. Note: sealing is a two-person job; it will take you about an hour for every 200 square feet of patio space.
- Using a high-quality sealer with a bug sprayer, spray about 50 surface feet at a time. Have your partner follow behind you with a soft bristle broom or paintbrush, working the sealant into pores and wiping up excess liquid.
Pro Tip:
You can perform a simple test to see if your patio needs resealing: simply turn a hose on your patio and see if the water beads up. If it doesn’t, it’s time to reseal. Sealing will protect your patio from dirt and stains and will prolong its life.
Stain and seal pergolas, gazebos, and other outdoor wooden structures
If your wooden structure is new, be sure pressure treated wood has been allowed to cure before adding stain, seal, or paint – this usually takes about 2-6 months.
- Prep the structure and surrounding area: Clean your structure by brushing off any surface dirt with a soft brush. Remove any accessories if possible. Cover any surrounding plants or objects with drop cloths.
- Using a brush or roller, begin applying stain at the top, working your way down. Allow the stain to completely dry, then apply the sealant in the same manner.
Pro Tips:
Outdoor wooden structures should be stained and sealed about every 2-3 years.
Remember, rain ruins stain! Stain when no rain is expected for about 24-48 hours. The outside temperature should between 50-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Update outdoor furniture and planters
- Replace old, cracked, or chipped furniture with new, or repair and repaint it. Clean outdoor furniture cushions. If cushions are heavily mildewed, replace them with new.
- Clean and repair outdoor planters, or get new ones.
- Swap out older plant material for fresh.
