Are you looking for the perfect grass for you that stays green and lush even in the colder months? In Western North Carolina, cool-season grasses thrive, especially at higher elevations in the state.
• Tall Fescue Grass. This is one of the top options for Western North Carolina lawns. It is specially adapted to the mountainous regions of the area and can be easily started from seed. It is tolerant to many diseases, drought, and cold. It prefers shaded areas of lawns, so if you live in the forest, it will do especially well for your yard. It’s a bunch type of grass and can handle moderate amounts of foot traffic.
• Kentucky Bluegrass. A popular choice for the area, this fine-textured grass is high quality, especially when grown in the right conditions. It enjoys fertile, well-drained soil and thrives in sun or light shade. It recovers well from stress and can recuperate nicely even after periods of drought.
• Perennial Ryegrass. This grass looks similar to Kentucky Bluegrass but is only adapted to the mountains, so it’s an excellent choice for our area. It is never seeded alone and often seeded in conjunction with Kentucky Bluegrass and together they work very well.
