If you think of accent lighting as small solar lights installed along the pathway to your home, think again! While pathways lights are certainly one way you can make your property more functional and attractive, there are many other options for accent lighting that can make your landscape shine.
Up Lighting uses in-ground or spotlights to cast light — you guessed it — upward toward an object. It’s great for highlighting a gorgeous tree or sculpture.
Placing lights in trees creates Moon Lighting. You’ll get a natural, moonlight-streaming-through-trees effect. Moon Lighting is perfect for accentuating gardens and low plants beneath trees.
Cross Lighting is good for highlighting a single architectural feature or tree. Simply place double beams of light below the object at different angles.
Want to accent a water feature such as a pond, waterfall, or pool? Use Mirror Lighting, which directs spotlights onto the feature; the light will reflect off the water.
There are a couple different ways to install wall lighting. Wash lighting creates a flat and even layer of light by placing fixtures about a foot or more from the wall. Or try wall grazing, placing the fixture closer to a wall or hedge, which will create a dramatic shadow.
Create silhouette lighting by placing a light behind an object to create an outline.
Shadow lighting works well for walls or other objects that will reflect the light and cast a shadow. The light is placed between the object and the vantage point.
