It’s February! That means we’re getting closer and closer to spring, which will be here in about a month. It may be too early to start sowing your seeds (unless you start them inside), but that doesn’t mean you can’t start on perfecting your lawn and beautifying it for the upcoming season.

If you were excited by the prospect of not having to deal with your lawn for a few months back in the depths of winter, part of you may be dreading to start yard work up again for Spring, but we’ve got some great tips to make it just a bit easier for you!

1. Start with checking your trees and shrubs to see how they’ve fared over the season. This can give you a great opportunity to begin pruning and encouraging new growth. Many of your trees and shrubs may still need protection from the cold, so keep that in mind as you begin your spring to do list.

2. Take a good hard look at your lawn. Although your lawn may still appear to be dormant, rest assured there is still plenty of work happening below the surface in preparation for warmer weather. Many weeds may start germinating around February, so look for weeds or crabgrass, and address them as needed!

3. Maintenance. As the weather warms up, you may need to start doing some maintenance on your lawn and garden beds, such as tilling up soil, sharpening your garden and lawn tools, turning your compost pile and planning your spring garden. February is also a great time (depending on your growing zone) to start your seeds indoors or in a protected greenhouse so that when it warm enough, they can be transplanted outside. Starting seeds indoors can give your plants a leg up and ensure abundant growth and harvests when the time comes!

4. Check on your annuals or container plants. Some container plants will need fertilizer around this time of year to help ensure they grow well through the warmer seasons. Deadheading flowers and watering plants should be done as well, if you haven’t been regularly doing so.
