If you have a cool-season lawn made up of bluegrass, fescue, or other similar varieties, February is an important month to prepare for a lush and healthy growing season. While it may seem like not much is happening in your lawn during the colder months, the steps you take now can make a big difference come spring. With just a bit of planning and effort, you can set the stage for a thriving lawn that looks its best.

Tune Up and Sharpen The Blades on the Lawn Mower

Before we start getting some warmer days in March and everyone begins to dream of summer, get a jump start on doing the annual maintenance to your lawn mower.  At the very least, sharpen the blades as they will make for a much better cut on the tender spring shoots and help lessen the chance for disease.

Remove any remaining leaf or limb debris

We had some very windy days, an ice storm and a snowfall in February.  It's likely that one or more of those events brought down more leaves, pine needles and limbs on top of your grassy areas. Make sure you remove them from your lawn so that it is getting maximum sunlight and not holding excess moisture.  It may seem like a simple step, but its often overlooked as we are only a few months removed from raking leaves.

Prepare for Applying Pre-Emergent

While February may be a bit early to apply pre emergent, you really have to watch the weather.  We typically recommend March as the best time, but an early spring can mean warm days.  At the very least, its time to get it on your calendar.
