Just because our Western North Carolina winters are a little chilly doesn’t mean you can’t continue to enjoy your landscape. The beauty of nature is evident in every season, and a WNC winter can be a great time to appreciate the quiet and solitude of your lawn. Here are just some of the ways you can enjoy your landscape in the colder season.
- Cozy up to the warmth of a fire pit or outdoor fireplace. Gather some blankets and s’mores supplies, then have a marshmallow roast with the family!
- Plant a winter garden. Evergreens, winter cabbage, and winter jasmine are all good choices for winter gardening. Plant them in pots on your patio or porch, so you’ll see them when you look out your windows, or purchase an outdoor heater so you can sit outside to enjoy them.
- Add cheer to the long, dark hours of winter by installing accent lighting. Hang lighting from the bare branches of trees, or spotlight a gorgeous hardscape.
- Use yard ornaments to create an artful display that you’ll love to look at. Consider metal sculptures, spinners, or wind chimes.
- Hang a bird feeder. Fill feeders with suet, or cover pinecones with peanut butter and birdseed and hang from trees. Then watch as cardinals, bluebirds, Carolina wrens, and other winter birds come to feast!
