Classical Contemporary: A Practical Approach to Colorful & Inviting!

Client ‘Wish List’

Provide optimal landscape enhancements for their new custom-built—[By Jay Sanders of Drom Construction]--architect-designed home. The home is sleek & sculptural, with very clean lines—**including a gutter-less roof—and through-views from the front entry to the back window walls. The clients desired terracing along the front hillside at the street above, plantings for screening & year-round color, and a landscape that would accommodate specific access routes & drainage requirements.

Notable Design Elements/Intents

Cindy, Scott & Jay had conceived of overlapping, curved retaining walls at the front slopes along the street, as well as a bridged entry to the front door from the driveway drop-off area. Initially, Cor-ten steel retaining was considered for the front slopes, but these evolved into natural boulder walls [constructed by Dixie Grading]. There was quite limited area along the front of the house for landscaping—which had to include the relatively deep dry creek that runs below the entry bridge, etc.--**and this was further complicated by the requirement for very significant depths of gravel along all house (foundation) walls to protect against roof runoff; no large plantings/trees could be installed within about 10’ of the walls. TPS convinced Cindy & Scott to install a section/cross-walk of pavers within the driveway that connected the end of the entry bridge across to a natural stone path & steps up the front hill; this added significantly to the overall inviting entry. Plantings at the front slope screen the road above, but allow for more distant views up & beyond. Landscape lighting includes wall ledge lights, path & uplights, and lights at the custom entry bridge.
